- THE DALAI LAMA MESSAGE -
Shakyamuni Buddha attained enlightenment and taught in India over 2500 years ago, yet his teaching remains refreshing and relevant even today. Like all major religions, Buddhism deals with basic human problems. So long as we continue to experience the basic human sufferings resulting from impermanence, attachment and wrong view, the Buddha¡¯s teaching will remain relevant. The key to overcoming suffering is inner peace. If we have that we can face difficulties with calm and reason, while keeping our inner happiness. The teachings of love, kindness and tolerance, the conduct of non-violence, and especially the Buddhist theory that all things are relative are a source of that inner peace.
Training our minds through meditation is an important part of Buddhist practice. But if our training in calming our minds, developing qualities like love, compassion, generosity and patience, is to be effective, we must put them into practice in day-to-day life. In an increasingly interdependent world our own welfare and happiness depend on many other people. Ultimately each of us is just a human being like everyone else. We all desire happiness and do not want suffering. As other people¡¯s right to peace and happiness is equal to our own, we have a responsibility to help those in need. As human beings we are social creatures and concern for each other, which I have called universal responsibility, is the very basis of living a harmonious life together.
I think the richness of both Tibetan and Korean culture is due primarily to the Buddhist teachings that are their mainstay and I am reminded that both Tibetan Buddhism and Korean Buddhism share common roots in India. Buddhism arrived in Korea and Tibet at different times and by different routes, giving rise to distinct traditions. However, these represent the assimilation of the same basic principles and practices to local conditions. Central to Buddha¡¯s teaching is seeing equality among human beings, indeed all sentient beings, in their right and potential to achieve liberation from suffering. This is something important to know and to understand whether you are a Buddhist or not. This is why I believe that even now, more than 2500 years later, the teaching of the Buddha and his own example can still contribute to global peace and individual happiness.
I am also aware that the people of Korea experienced a great upheaval at the same time as the Tibetans have met similar challenges with some success. I have much admiration for the determination and dedication with which our Korean Dharma brothers and sisters have worked to preserve their rich Buddhism tradition.
